When Ingredients Matter Most: A Heartbreaking Reminder on Puppy Shampoo Safety
Recently, we received an email that left us devastated and reminded us why we do what we do every single day.
"[Brand Name] dog shampoo 3-in-1, soothing hemp oil + lavender. Puppies were healthy, gave them a bath and 3 out of 6 passed away."
While we cannot confirm what caused the tragic death of these 3 puppies, this email underscores the importance of scrutinizing every single ingredient that goes on your pet's body - especially when it comes to puppies.
Puppies Are Especially Vulnerable
Puppies have developing immune systems, thinner skin, and a higher sensitivity to toxic ingredients.
What may cause un-noticed irritation for an adult dog could be harmful - or even fatal -to a puppy.
While this shampoo does contain a lot of all natural ingredients, they are overshadowed by the toxic synthetic ingredients.
Here is the list of ingredients from the shampoo:
Out of the 31 ingredients in this shampoo, there are 12 that I wouldn't feel comfortable using on any dog - let alone a vulnerable puppy:
-
Sodium Laureth Sulfate - ❌
A surfactant and foaming agent. Can be contaminated with 1,4-dioxane, a probable carcinogen. Known skin and eye irritant. Not safe for sensitive skin or puppies. -
Cocamidopropyl Betaine (CAPB)- ⚠️
Coconut-derived surfactant. Can cause skin irritation or allergic reactions, especially if not well purified. While CAPB is considered a "mild" surfactant, impurities like DMAPA and amidoamine can cause allergic reactions, especially in people and pets with sensitive skin. Puppies, in particular, are at higher risk due to their delicate skin barrier and developing immune systems. -
Fragrance - ❌
Can mask hundreds of undisclosed chemicals. Often includes phthalates, allergens, and skin sensitizers. Very concerning for pets, especially puppies. -
Polyquaternium-7 - ⚠️
Synthetic conditioning agent. Can cause irritation and may be contaminated with acrylamide which has links to cancer. -
PEG-120 Methyl Glucose Dioleate - ❌
PEG compounds can be contaminated with ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane. Both are potential carcinogens. -
PEG-16 Macadamia Glycerides - ❌
Another PEG compound. Same contamination concerns as above. -
Octyldodecanol - ⚠️
Fatty alcohol. Generally safe in moderation, but can cause irritation in some individuals. -
Sodium Propoxyhydroxypropyl Thiosulfate Silica - ⚠️
Used to make the fur appear full and thick. There is a lack of safety data for pet use, especially puppies. -
Polysorbate 20 - ❌
Can be contaminated with ethylene oxide. Known to cause allergic reactions in some dogs. -
Triethanolamine - ❌
Used to adjust pH but can form nitrosamines, which are carcinogenic. Banned in some countries for personal care products. -
Methylchloroisothiazolinone - ❌
Preservative with high allergy and sensitization risk. -
Methylisothiazolinone - ❌
Another strong preservative. Linked to neurotoxicity and skin irritation. Also banned or restricted in many regions.
All Natural Dog Shampoo Claim
Next, I have to comment on one of the claims on the bottle.
The bottle claims to be "nourishing" and "natural".
While 10 of the ingredients may be "natural or naturally derived", 5 of them started as plants and were chemically altered so dramatically that they became a synthetic ingredient and 16 of the ingredients ARE 100% synthetic!
So, of the 31 ingredients, over half are synthetic or chemically modified - and only a handful are what we'd consider truly natural and safe, especially for puppies.
🧴 Why the "Paraben-Free" Claim Can Be Misleading
The next claim on the bottle is that it is "Paraben Free".
Some companies leave parabens out of a formula and boldly label it "paraben-free"-but then use other equally problematic preservatives that can be just as harsh or toxic, especially for puppies.
In this case, while no parabens are listed, the product includes:
- Methylchloroisothiazolinone
- Methylisothiazolinone
These are not parabens, but they're strong preservatives that:
- Are known skin irritants
- Have been linked to allergic reactions
- Are restricted or banned in leave-on products in the European Union (EU)
- Can be especially harsh for sensitive pets like puppies
So, while technically "paraben-free," it's far from "safe" in the way most pet parents would hope.
Saying it is "paraben-free" but still contains methylisothiazolinone is kind of like saying something is lead free but contains asbestos. It just makes no sense!

Our Advice to Pet Parents
- Read every ingredient on the label and if you don't know what it is, research it on the pet shampoo ingredient database.
- Avoid anything with synthetic fragrance, sulfates, PEGs, polysorbates, or parabens.
- Choose certified organic when possible, it's your best assurance of transparency and safety. And remember, one or two organic ingredients in a bottle that is otherwise toxic goo, does not make it safe or healthy.
- And when in doubt, reach out! We're always happy to help decode an ingredient list.
We send our heartfelt condolences to the person who reached out and all pet parents who've experienced loss. We hope this post empowers others to make safer choices because when it comes to our pets, ingredients are everything!
